Today, more than half of UNDP’s work takes place in regions devastated by conflict, climate shocks, and disasters, reflecting a commitment to solutions that strengthen resilience, restore hope, and reduce future needs. In Ukraine, UNDP helps communities endure despite war. When Bakhmut’s Vocational Training Centre was destroyed, its director relocated the school to Hoshcha, enabling 640 students to continue their education in fields like cooking, welding, and mechanics. In Chernivtsi, initiatives such as the “University of the Third Age” provide older and displaced people with learning and community spaces, while mobile services deliver vital support to isolated villages. UNDP also aids demining efforts, strengthens energy grids, and restores essential services, ensuring families can safely return home.
In Sudan, where conflict has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, UNDP promotes self-reliance amid ongoing instability. Solar irrigation systems have helped farmers like Hamid increase productivity and reduce fuel costs, while women-led agricultural training programs empower individuals like Mariam to support their households collectively. With 75% of health facilities closed, UNDP, in partnership with the Global Fund, provides critical healthcare through mobile clinics and strengthens supply chains, reaching millions with medicines, meals, clean water, and job opportunities.
Across the Asia-Pacific, UNDP focuses on disaster preparedness for coastal communities at risk from tsunamis and other hazards. Platforms like STEP-A in Indonesia assess schools and evacuation routes, while in Samoa, children use virtual reality to practice evacuations safely. Inclusive planning involves persons with disabilities in designing evacuation strategies in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the Philippines. Educational initiatives, such as Tsunami Story Books, teach safety through engaging narratives, helping communities transform vulnerability into preparedness.
Globally, UNDP’s efforts in fragile contexts demonstrate that rebuilding is an urgent act of hope. By restoring essential services, creating opportunities, and preparing communities for future risks, UNDP and its partners enable recovery that strengthens resilience.
