The African Development Bank Group has approved a $1 million emergency grant to support Mozambique’s recovery efforts following severe flooding that impacted the country’s central and southern regions, particularly Maputo and Gaza provinces, in January 2026. The funding aims to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance and accelerate recovery operations in affected communities.
The emergency relief package is financed through the Bank’s Special Relief Fund and was approved after a formal request from the Government of Mozambique. The initiative is designed to provide immediate support to families displaced or impacted by the disaster, with implementation led by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which will oversee delivery of shelter and humanitarian aid.
The project will focus on providing emergency shelter and essential household supplies to approximately 45,000 people. Assistance includes the distribution of shelter kits and non-food items such as tarpaulins, blankets, mosquito nets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets, and solar lamps. The response also includes logistical support such as transportation, storage, site preparation, and hygiene awareness activities.
Officials emphasized that the intervention is aimed at restoring safety and dignity for affected households while supporting national recovery efforts. The program builds on ongoing humanitarian operations already reaching thousands of households across the hardest-hit districts, with additional distribution phases planned in priority regions identified in coordination with local authorities.
The African Development Bank highlighted that the grant reflects its broader commitment to disaster response and climate resilience in Africa. The initiative also incorporates modern assessment tools, including drone-based disaster management systems, to improve the speed and accuracy of relief delivery.
Government and humanitarian partners have stressed the importance of coordinated international support as Mozambique continues to recover from the flooding. The funding is expected to strengthen emergency response capacity while contributing to longer-term preparedness and resilience against future climate-related disasters.
The program underscores continued cooperation between international financial institutions, national governments, and humanitarian agencies in addressing urgent disaster impacts and supporting vulnerable communities during crisis recovery.
