The United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the Government of the Republic of Moldova have signed a new Programme for Country Partnership to strengthen industrial modernization, economic competitiveness and long-term sustainable development in the country.
The agreement was signed in Vienna by UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller and Eugeniu Osmochescu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization of the Republic of Moldova. The signing marks a new phase of strategic cooperation between UNIDO and Moldova.
The Programme for Country Partnership will provide a structured platform to align Moldova’s national industrial priorities with international expertise, investment and development partnerships. It aims to support the country’s economic transformation while advancing green growth, innovation and competitiveness.
UNIDO said the partnership will help Moldova strengthen its industrial modernization agenda, unlock investment and create new opportunities for people and businesses. The initiative is also expected to support the country’s reform process and closer alignment with European Union standards.
The Government of Moldova emphasized that the partnership will help build a more competitive, innovative and sustainable economy. It will support businesses, especially micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, by improving access to tools, knowledge and opportunities for development, innovation and growth.
A diagnostic assessment conducted by UNIDO in 2025 identified strong potential for Moldova’s industrial growth. The analysis highlighted opportunities in sectors such as food processing, automotive components and microelectronics, which could help expand exports, improve competitiveness and create quality employment.
The partnership will focus on three main areas: human capital development, MSME competitiveness and the transition to a green and circular economy. These priorities are aligned with Moldova’s National Development Strategy “European Moldova 2030” and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023–2027.
UNIDO is already supporting Moldova through five technical cooperation projects. These projects focus on improving food safety standards, supporting compliance with EU requirements, advancing circular economy practices and promoting green industrial transformation.
So far, more than 60 enterprises in Moldova have improved their capacities in food safety, traceability, sustainability and business planning. Around 70 stakeholders have also received knowledge and training on resource efficiency and circular economy approaches.
In addition, more than 50 industrial park administrators and tenants have developed practical skills to implement eco-industrial park models. Through the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme, start-ups and SMEs have received USD 250,000 in funding, along with international acceleration and networking support.
The new Programme for Country Partnership comes at an important time as Moldova advances its European Union accession process and continues implementing structural reforms. By supporting industrial capacity, green technologies, innovation and MSME growth, the partnership aims to strengthen Moldova’s resilience and long-term economic competitiveness.
Overall, the UNIDO–Moldova partnership represents an important step toward sustainable industrial development. It is expected to help modernize key sectors, support private sector growth, create quality jobs and bring Moldova’s economy closer to European Union standards.
