On National Housing Day, November 22, 2025, the Government of Canada reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the nation’s housing crisis by introducing Build Canada Homes, a federal agency focused on scaling up affordable housing across the country. The agency is tasked with reducing housing costs, cutting red tape, and accelerating the construction of homes, while also addressing homelessness through transitional and supportive housing. Build Canada Homes works collaboratively with provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous communities, non-profits, and private developers to drive innovation and efficiency in the housing sector.
As part of this effort, Build Canada Homes released its Investment Policy Framework, establishing priorities, investment principles, and eligibility criteria for federal housing investments. The framework emphasizes construction-ready projects, affordability that meets local needs, innovative methods such as modular and factory-built housing, strong partnerships for regional impact, and the use of Canadian materials to support local supply chains. This flexible, outcome-driven approach aims to accelerate housing delivery while ensuring long-term community stability.
The agency’s initiatives include a streamlined proposal process through the Build Canada Homes portal, set to launch in late November, which will enable partners to submit projects for federal support. The framework is designed to unlock stalled projects, scale innovative solutions, and deliver housing faster and more cost-effectively.
To highlight National Housing Day, the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, toured a co-operative housing development site in Coquitlam, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic investment in making homes accessible to Canadians. The government also announced new project investments, including $76.3 million for 146 new rental homes in Coquitlam, $14.3 million for 54 affordable homes in Winnipeg, $32 million for 90 rental homes in Richmond Hill, $2.6 million for 20 homes in Trois-Rivières, and $3.4 million for 10 homes in Souris, Prince Edward Island.
