Nominations have opened for the third edition of the Timor-Leste Women Entrepreneur Awards in Dili, recognizing women entrepreneurs who are driving job creation, innovation, and economic development across the country. The initiative is organized by International Finance Corporation and the Timor-Leste Women’s Business Association, with national patronage and support from key development partners.
The awards are part of IFC’s broader financial sector skills program in Timor-Leste, implemented alongside the Central Bank and supported by international partners. The program aims to strengthen financial inclusion by enhancing skills, improving access to financial systems, and supporting the growth of women-led businesses across the country.
Speaking at the launch, President José Ramos-Horta highlighted the central role women play in the country’s development, emphasizing their contributions to entrepreneurship, job creation, and innovation across both urban and rural areas. He encouraged women leaders to apply and share their stories as part of building a stronger and more inclusive economy.
Building on the success of previous editions, which attracted strong participation and helped winners expand their businesses, the awards continue to celebrate achievements across sectors such as agriculture, retail, hospitality, and finance. Past recipients have gained increased visibility, professional growth, and opportunities for business expansion.

However, challenges remain, including limited access to finance, business information, and professional networks, which continue to constrain growth for many women-led enterprises.
The awards aim to address these gaps by recognizing excellence, strengthening networks, and promoting greater visibility for women in business. According to representatives from the World Bank Group, women lead more than half of MSMEs in Timor-Leste, making them a critical force in the country’s economic development and inclusive growth.
The 2026 edition will feature multiple award categories covering startups, established businesses, leadership, and initiatives that promote financial inclusion. Open to applicants from across all municipalities, the program encourages broad participation from individuals, organizations, and companies, with nominations remaining open until early July 2026.
AEMTL, founded in 2008 by a group of women entrepreneurs, continues to play a key role in supporting business development in Timor-Leste by providing training, knowledge sharing, and connections across sectors. Through partnerships with international institutions and government agencies, it aims to strengthen the capacity of local entrepreneurs and contribute to long-term economic development.
