Nominations have officially opened for the Third Women in Business Awards in Timor-Leste, celebrating the achievements of women entrepreneurs who are driving economic growth, creating jobs, and transforming industries across the country. The awards are being held under the patronage of José Ramos-Horta, highlighting strong national support for women’s leadership and entrepreneurship.
The initiative is organized by the International Finance Corporation in partnership with the Associação Empresarial das Mulheres de Timor-Leste, as part of a broader financial sector skills development program. Supported by national and international partners, the programme aims to strengthen financial inclusion and build capacity within the country’s growing private sector.
The awards build on the success of previous editions, which attracted strong participation and helped increase visibility for women-led businesses. Past winners have experienced business growth, improved networks, and greater confidence, contributing to stronger leadership roles and enhanced economic participation across various sectors including agriculture, retail, finance, and hospitality.
Women entrepreneurs play a critical role in Timor-Leste’s economy, particularly through micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises that generate employment and support local communities. The awards serve as a platform to recognize these contributions while encouraging more women to engage in entrepreneurship and business leadership.
Despite their growing impact, many women entrepreneurs continue to face challenges such as limited access to finance, business knowledge, and professional networks. The awards aim to address these gaps by promoting visibility, strengthening connections, and encouraging knowledge-sharing, thereby supporting the expansion of women-owned enterprises.
The 2026 edition will feature multiple award categories recognizing excellence in start-ups, established businesses, corporate leadership, and initiatives that promote women’s financial inclusion. Open to participants from across all regions of the country, the programme encourages a wide range of nominations from individuals, organizations, and institutions.
Overall, the Women in Business Awards highlight the importance of empowering women entrepreneurs as key drivers of inclusive economic growth. By celebrating success, fostering innovation, and strengthening support systems, the initiative contributes to building a more resilient and inclusive economy in Timor-Leste.
