The Government of Brazil and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have launched a new South–South cooperation project to strengthen care policies and promote knowledge exchange across Latin America and the Caribbean. Developed under the Brazil–ILO “Social Justice for the Global South” programme, the initiative aims to support the design and implementation of public policies that expand the right to care, improve conditions for caregivers, and promote gender equality and decent work. The project was officially launched in Brasília with participation from ILO and Brazilian government representatives, highlighting care as a key policy priority.
The initiative focuses on strengthening legal frameworks, governance systems, and financing models for care policies, building on Brazil’s National Care Policy and facilitating collaboration with partner countries facing similar challenges such as ageing populations, high informality, and unequal unpaid care work distribution. It will promote direct knowledge sharing through regional exchanges, capacity-building activities, and joint policy development across participating countries in the region.
Implemented over the 2026–27 period, the project is designed to systematize experiences and generate practical tools that can inform broader policy approaches in the Global South. It reflects the broader Brazil–ILO partnership, established in 2009, which promotes decent work, social protection, and inclusive development, and reinforces the role of South–South cooperation in advancing sustainable and equitable care systems.
