The United Kingdom is introducing Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs) for visitors who do not currently require a visa for short stays or who do not hold an existing UK immigration status. Eligible European travellers can begin applying for an ETA from 5 March 2025, and the requirement to hold an ETA for travel to the UK will come into effect on 2 April 2025. This digital permission allows multiple entries to the UK, with stays of up to six months at a time over a period of two years, or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
ETAs are designed to simplify travel while enhancing border security, aligning the UK with similar systems used by countries such as the United States and Australia. Applications are quick and straightforward, with the fastest method being the official UK ETA app, available for download on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Applicants can also apply through the official GOV.UK website. Travellers are advised to avoid unofficial sites to prevent scams.
Most applications are automatically approved within minutes via the ETA app, allowing for spontaneous travel, though applicants should allow up to three working days for a decision in case additional review is needed. To apply, travellers must pay a fee, provide contact and passport details, submit a compliant digital photo, and answer a set of questions. Importantly, the ETA is linked to the passport used in the application, and a new ETA will be required if a passport is renewed.
For more information, guidance, and updates, travellers can consult GOV.UK, including video introductions explaining what an ETA is and how to apply. The introduction of ETAs is intended to make UK travel more secure, streamlined, and consistent with international border practices.
