Millions of people across England are set to benefit from a £20 million investment in civic museums through the government’s Museum Renewal Fund. The funding is aimed at protecting opening hours, safeguarding jobs, and ensuring that local museums can continue to tell the national story at a community level. A total of 75 museum organisations, including Birmingham Museums Trust, Barnsley Museums, and Discover Bucks Museum, will receive grants to help maintain and enhance their services.
The Museum Renewal Fund forms part of the wider £270 million Arts Everywhere Fund, supporting the government’s Plan for Change to promote economic growth and broaden access to culture across the country. The funding will help museums improve public access to collections, sustain community and educational programmes, and ensure these cultural institutions remain fit for the future. By strengthening museums, the fund supports local pride, attracts tourism, and contributes to regional economic development.
In Luton, The Culture Trust received £530,528 to expand outreach, enhance public access, and maintain staffing levels, benefiting local learners, volunteers, and diverse communities. Birmingham Museums Trust will receive over £994,742 to deliver community-focused exhibitions, improve access to key collections, and host family-friendly events such as its summer show “Giants” and a pop-up tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. Barnsley Museums will secure £266,273 to support its five free-to-visit sites, maintaining public programming, employment, and educational initiatives like its Museums and Schools scheme. Discover Bucks Museum will receive £314,000 to preserve its heritage displays, improve audience engagement, and enhance visitor experiences, including redeveloping the children’s gallery.
Arts Council England Chair Sir Nicholas Serota emphasized that museums and galleries are central to communities across the UK, telling vital stories about history, people, and place. The Museum Renewal Fund will provide a crucial lifeline, helping local museums stabilize financially and build towards a sustainable future while continuing to inspire and educate future generations.
