The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Adaptation Fund have launched a new $5 million regional initiative to strengthen locally led climate adaptation solutions across the Western Balkans.
The four-year project, Balkan Climate Adaptation Futures: A Regional Innovation Initiative for Resilience, will support communities, innovators, civil society organizations, social enterprises and small businesses in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia to develop and expand solutions that address climate risks.
The initiative comes as the Western Balkans faces increasing climate challenges, including floods, droughts, heatwaves and wildfires. Recent extreme weather events have highlighted the need for stronger resilience measures and greater investment in locally developed adaptation strategies.
The project will provide grants, technical assistance, business development support and opportunities for regional knowledge exchange to help promising climate solutions move from early ideas to wider implementation.
A key focus of the initiative will be ensuring that adaptation efforts are inclusive and benefit communities most affected by climate change. The programme will promote gender equality and social inclusion while supporting local actors who have direct knowledge of environmental challenges in their communities.
UNDP and the Adaptation Fund emphasized that locally led adaptation is essential for creating long-term resilience because communities understand their own risks, priorities and opportunities for action. By connecting local innovators with financial resources, technical expertise and regional partnerships, the initiative aims to accelerate practical climate solutions.
The project builds on the ongoing collaboration between UNDP and the Adaptation Fund to advance climate adaptation efforts worldwide. It will also draw on previous innovation programmes to create stronger pathways for community-driven solutions to receive support, grow and contribute to national climate priorities.
Through increased cooperation among countries in the Western Balkans, the initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience, encourage innovation and help communities develop sustainable responses to the impacts of climate change.
