Bosnia and Herzegovina has launched two major environmental initiatives worth nearly USD 5.8 million to strengthen climate action, improve biodiversity protection and support sustainable development across the country.
Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the projects aim to improve climate transparency, restore ecosystems and expand nature-based solutions to address the growing impacts of climate change.
The initiatives were officially launched during inception workshops held on Trebević on 7 and 8 July 2026, bringing together government institutions, international partners and environmental stakeholders from across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
One of the projects, focused on introducing nature-based solutions for resilient ecosystems, green recovery and sustainable livelihoods, has received USD 4.83 million in funding. It will support biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable land management and climate resilience while creating new opportunities for local communities.
The project will also help improve the management of protected areas, promote sustainable practices and strengthen cooperation among national and local institutions working to protect natural resources.
A second initiative, supported with USD 912,649 in GEF funding, will focus on strengthening Bosnia and Herzegovina’s climate transparency framework. The project will improve greenhouse gas monitoring, climate reporting systems and environmental data management in line with international climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina Staša Košarac emphasized the importance of stronger climate governance, environmental protection and cooperation among institutions to achieve long-term sustainability goals.
UNDP Resident Representative Renaud Meyer highlighted that effective climate action depends on reliable data, strong institutions and healthy ecosystems. The initiatives are expected to improve the management of protected areas, expand sustainable land management practices and help reduce millions of tonnes of carbon emissions over the coming decades.
The new investment marks another step in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s efforts to build climate resilience, protect biodiversity and support sustainable economic opportunities. Through continued cooperation among government bodies, international partners and communities, the country aims to advance environmental protection while creating a more sustainable future.
