The African Development Bank Group (AfDB), in partnership with the Government of Mozambique, the Government of the Republic of Korea, and Busan Technopark, is marking the successful completion of a drone-based disaster management project designed to strengthen Mozambique’s ability to respond to climate-related emergencies.
The project, supported by the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC) Trust Fund, has helped improve disaster preparedness and emergency response through advanced drone technology, technical training, and institutional capacity building. The initiative provides national institutions with digital tools and expertise to better manage risks linked to cyclones, floods, and other natural disasters.
A key milestone of the project is the graduation of 30 Mozambican drone pilots who completed an intensive training programme and received nationally recognised certifications. The newly trained specialists will support the country’s ability to use drone technology for aerial monitoring, mapping, data collection, and emergency response operations.
The project completion ceremony will feature a live drone demonstration showcasing how aerial technologies can support disaster risk management through real-time imaging, environmental monitoring, and response simulations. These applications have already been tested during flood events in Mozambique, demonstrating their potential to improve decision-making and protect communities.
The initiative also creates opportunities to expand drone applications beyond disaster management, including agriculture, food security, climate monitoring, and geospatial data services. Discussions during the event will focus on technology transfer, innovation, entrepreneurship, and building a sustainable national drone ecosystem.
The African Development Bank highlighted that the project reflects its commitment to digital transformation and climate resilience across Africa. The collaboration between Mozambique, Korea, Busan Technopark, and the AfDB demonstrates how technology partnerships and knowledge sharing can support sustainable development and strengthen local capabilities.
The successful completion of the KOAFEC Trust Fund-supported project also highlights the growing role of digital innovation in Africa’s development and sets the foundation for future cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and technology-driven solutions.
