As governments increasingly adopt generative artificial intelligence (AI) to improve public services and decision-making, ensuring public trust has become a critical challenge. A recent blog by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) highlights that while AI can enhance productivity and streamline government operations, it can also generate inaccurate, biased, or misleading content that appears credible, making human oversight essential.
Generative AI is being used to assist with tasks such as drafting reports, preparing public communications, and providing information on government services. However, these tools may produce false information, omit important details, or reinforce existing biases while presenting outputs with a high level of confidence. Such errors can negatively affect public services, policy decisions, and citizens’ trust in government institutions.
The IDB emphasizes that governments should verify AI-generated information by checking facts, validating sources, and reviewing evidence before relying on the results. Public institutions are also encouraged to identify potential biases in AI outputs to ensure that decisions and communications remain fair, inclusive, and free from harmful stereotypes.
Transparency is another key recommendation. Citizens should be informed when AI is used to support government processes, while public agencies should clearly explain how AI-generated content is reviewed and who remains accountable for final decisions. Human judgment continues to play a vital role in interpreting complex situations, assessing risks, and making decisions that serve the public interest.
The IDB also stresses that successful AI adoption requires more than technology. Governments need strong governance frameworks, risk management practices, and continuous capacity building to use AI responsibly. By combining innovation with transparency, oversight, and accountability, public institutions can harness the benefits of generative AI while maintaining citizens’ confidence and trust.
