The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has invested €6.7 million in a €30 million sustainability-linked bond issued by Romanian car leasing and rental company Autonom. The investment will support the company’s expansion while advancing its environmental, social, and digital transformation goals.
The bond proceeds will help Autonom grow and modernize its vehicle fleet to meet rising demand from businesses across Romania. As part of its sustainability commitments, the company aims to reduce the carbon intensity of its operating fleet by 55% by 2030 and increase the share of women in management positions from 37% in 2023 to 46% by 2030.
Autonom has also pledged to launch a company-wide digital skills program covering all employees, with training focused on digital literacy, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. The initiative is designed to strengthen workforce capabilities and support Romania’s ongoing digital transition.
Founded in 2006, Autonom has become Romania’s largest independent provider of integrated mobility solutions, operating more than 17,600 vehicles through a nationwide network of over 50 agencies. Around 31% of its fleet consists of hybrid and electric vehicles, reflecting the company’s commitment to cleaner transportation.
The EBRD said the investment not only supports Autonom’s long-term sustainability strategy but also contributes to the development of Romania’s corporate bond market and the decarbonization of the transport sector. The financing highlights growing investor confidence in sustainable business models and reinforces efforts to promote green mobility and responsible corporate growth in Romania.
