IFC and Airtel Africa Expand Digital Connectivity to Boost Jobs and Inclusion Across Africa

Dated: July 2, 2026

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has announced a $150 million financing package to support Airtel Africa in expanding and upgrading its mobile network infrastructure across multiple countries in Africa. The investment aims to improve digital connectivity, strengthen economic inclusion, and create new job opportunities.

The funding will be directed toward two Airtel Africa subsidiaries to enhance mobile network capacity and extend high-speed data services to underserved and rural communities. By improving access to reliable internet and mobile connectivity, the project is expected to enable small businesses to grow, support entrepreneurs in reaching wider markets, and help young people access digital tools and employment opportunities.

According to IFC, expanding digital infrastructure is a key driver of inclusive economic growth. Stronger telecom networks can support a wide range of digital-dependent livelihoods, including mobile money agents, online traders, and informal service providers, while also improving access to education, skills development, and financial services.

Airtel Africa’s leadership highlighted that the partnership with IFC supports the company’s broader strategy to modernize its network and accelerate digital inclusion across the continent. The company emphasized that improved connectivity will help scale access to digital services and expand economic opportunities for individuals and communities.

IFC also stressed that its continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure reflects a broader commitment to strengthening private-sector-led development in emerging markets. Over the past decade, the institution has mobilized significant financing in the technology and telecommunications sectors to support innovation, productivity, and job creation.

By improving digital access, the initiative aims to reduce inequality in connectivity and support long-term development outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa, where digital infrastructure remains a critical enabler of economic participation and growth.
