Two leading Dutch organizations, Rutgers and Aidsfonds – Soa Aids Nederland, have announced an administrative merger aimed at strengthening their joint work on sexual health, HIV prevention, and human rights. The move marks an important step toward a full legal merger planned for January 2027.
Under the new structure, the organizations will operate with shared leadership and a unified strategic direction, combining expertise, networks, and resources. The goal is to improve coordination and increase impact in addressing sexual health challenges both in the Netherlands and globally.
The merged entity will focus on advancing access to sexual and reproductive health services, reducing HIV infections, and combating sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexual violence, and misinformation. It also aims to support vulnerable populations, including young people, women, LGBTQ+ communities, and people living with HIV.
Both organizations emphasized that sexual health challenges are becoming increasingly complex, driven by widening inequalities, persistent stigma, and the spread of misinformation. By joining forces, they aim to respond more effectively and strengthen their role as a key partner for governments, healthcare systems, and educational institutions.
Internationally, the merger is expected to enhance collaboration within global and European health networks, improve monitoring of emerging health trends, and expand efforts in advocacy and fundraising for HIV prevention and sexual health programs.
The administrative merger officially takes effect on 1 July 2026, with co-leadership shared between senior representatives from both organizations. A full legal merger is planned for 2027, when the two entities will formally operate as a single organization.
This strategic integration reflects a broader effort to strengthen public health impact through collaboration, ensuring more effective responses to sexual health challenges in an evolving global landscape.
