A new community resilience initiative called Savanes Kpaadu has been launched in Togo’s Savanes region to address challenges related to insecurity, poverty, limited access to services, and economic vulnerability. The project, officially launched on June 10, 2026, will be implemented by Plan International with financial support from the European Union, which has committed approximately CFA1.9 billion to the program.
The initiative will run for 18 months and focuses on strengthening community resilience through education, economic empowerment, civilian protection, violence prevention, and improved access to essential rights and services. The project is designed to support vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and children living in areas affected by security and development challenges.
A major component of the program involves promoting economic opportunities for local residents. More than 1,120 women and young people will receive assistance to establish or expand small businesses and other income-generating activities. The initiative aims to improve household incomes, increase economic self-reliance, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities within local communities.
Education and child welfare also form key pillars of the project. Around 4,000 children will receive school kits to support their education, while 800 individuals will be assisted in obtaining birth certificates and other civil registration documents. Access to such documentation is essential for securing education, healthcare, legal rights, and social services.
The program also includes a strong protection component. Approximately 300 survivors of gender-based violence will receive ongoing support services, helping them access protection, counseling, and other assistance needed for recovery and reintegration.
According to regional authorities, the project is expected to strengthen primary education systems, empower women and youth, and improve the protection of children’s rights throughout the region. Local leaders view the initiative as an important contribution to both social development and community stability.
Savanes Kpaadu forms part of broader efforts by the Togolese government and international partners to strengthen resilience in the Savanes region, which has faced security-related challenges since 2021. The project complements existing interventions under the Emergency Programme for the Savanes Region, which seeks to improve living conditions, promote social cohesion, and enhance the capacity of communities to withstand economic and security shocks.
By combining education, economic empowerment, civil registration, and social protection measures, the initiative aims to create more resilient communities while addressing some of the root causes of vulnerability in northern Togo.
