Yerevan — June 5, 2026 — In celebration of International Biodiversity Day, a two-day intensive training series titled From Field to Digital Platform: Biodiversity Data Management was held on May 26–27. Organized by the UNDP BES-Net Armenia project in cooperation with the RA Ministry of Environment, the training aimed to strengthen biodiversity data knowledge and management skills among practitioners and academics.
The sessions brought together eco-patrols from Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions and students and researchers from leading universities, including the Armenian State Pedagogical University and the Armenian National Agrarian University.
On May 26, eco-patrols participated in The Digital Key of Blue Sevan, learning about biodiversity in the Sevan Lake basin, digitization tools, and conducting fieldwork at the Norashen Reserve. On May 27, students and researchers joined From Nature to Byte: Student Bioblitz with iNaturalist, combining fieldwork at the Reserve Park Complex in Jrvezh with data digitization and scientific processing.
The training introduced participants to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), highlighting Armenia’s role as an associate member country. More than 40 beneficiaries, including 22 young people, are now actively digitizing field data on digital platforms, with efforts continuing until June 15.
Eco-patrols praised the use of digital tools for enhancing monitoring duties, while students welcomed the blended learning model that combined theory, fieldwork, and digital applications. Certificates will be awarded to all participants, with additional field visits planned to strengthen practical skills.
By equipping practitioners and researchers with modern biodiversity data management tools, Armenia is building a stronger foundation for conservation, scientific research, and community engagement in protecting its natural heritage.
