The government of Gabon has announced an $8.9 million investment aimed at strengthening its digital skills ecosystem and reducing reliance on foreign expertise. The initiative, formalized on 1 June 2026 in Libreville, brings together the country’s telecommunications regulator ARCEP and the National Institute of Post, Information and Communication Technologies (INPTIC) to modernize national training in digital professions.
The funding, structured as a renewable two-year programme, will support the rehabilitation of INPTIC’s infrastructure, the acquisition of new technological equipment, and the creation of specialized laboratories. The goal is to build a stronger pipeline of local talent capable of supporting Gabon’s ongoing digital transformation.
A key component of the programme is the expansion of academic training in high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data management, telecommunications networks, and digital entrepreneurship. These areas have been identified as critical to meeting the country’s future workforce needs.
Government officials emphasized that the investment is part of a broader national digitalization strategy focused on developing human capital. The initiative also includes governance reforms at INPTIC to improve management efficiency and align training programmes with labour market demands.
ARCEP will also provide access to sector data and market analysis, enabling the institute to better anticipate technological trends and evolving industry requirements. This approach is intended to ensure that graduates are equipped with relevant, future-ready skills.
The programme comes at a time of rapidly growing demand for digital skills across Africa. According to international estimates, hundreds of millions of jobs in Sub-Saharan Africa will require digital competencies by 2030, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and cloud technologies.
By strengthening domestic training capacity, Gabon aims to reduce dependence on external expertise and position INPTIC as a regional hub for digital education in Central Africa. The initiative reflects a broader effort to align education systems with economic needs and accelerate participation in the global digital economy.
