The Schmidt Family Foundation has renewed its long-term funding for the Schmidt Environmental Solutions Fellows Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), extending nearly a decade of support for early-career environmental researchers.
The renewed multi-year grant will continue to fund student and postdoctoral fellowships focused on developing real-world solutions to major environmental challenges, including climate change, overfishing, drought, wildfires, and ecosystem degradation. The program is designed to help researchers move beyond academic study and apply their work to practical environmental solutions.
Since its inception, the program has supported more than 200 UCSB students, enabling research in areas such as coral reef restoration, carbon sequestration, agricultural sustainability, and marine ecosystem recovery. The latest funding cycle will also expand support for postdoctoral researchers and strengthen mentorship structures between senior and junior fellows.
A key feature of the program is its emphasis on applied research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Fellows receive training not only in scientific methods but also in science communication, helping them translate complex research into accessible information for policymakers, journalists, and the public. Workshops include media engagement sessions with journalists from major outlets and communications training designed to improve outreach and impact.
The expanded program will introduce new mentorship opportunities, pairing postdoctoral researchers with graduate and undergraduate students to support skill development in areas such as data analysis, visualization, grant writing, and public communication. The initiative will also include field-based learning experiences, allowing students to conduct research in natural environments such as the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory.
Program leaders emphasize that the fellowship is intended to build the next generation of environmental scientists by providing sustained funding, hands-on experience, and professional development opportunities. The goal is to strengthen both scientific research capacity and the ability to communicate findings effectively to broader audiences.
Participants in the program have gone on to careers in academia, government, nonprofit organizations, and environmental innovation sectors. Alumni highlight the fellowship’s role in enabling career pathways that may not have otherwise been accessible, particularly for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
The Schmidt Environmental Solutions Fellows Program continues to position itself as a long-term investment in environmental research and leadership development, combining funding stability with practical training to address urgent global environmental challenges.
