The Australian Government has announced $18.83 million in funding through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) to support research aimed at improving mental health outcomes and preventing mental illness across the country.
The funding, announced on 26 May 2026, will be delivered under the MRFF’s Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission, which focuses on translating research into practical, real-world mental health solutions.
The initiative is designed to address emerging national mental health challenges, particularly among children and young adults. It will support research that generates evidence for early intervention strategies, especially in response to new trends in substance use and evolving mental health conditions.
A key priority of the funding round is to support projects led by mid-career researchers. These projects are expected to focus on implementing evidence-based approaches that improve mental wellbeing and help prevent the onset of mental illness.
The MRFF emphasises the importance of moving research beyond academic findings and into practical applications that can be used within healthcare systems, schools, and community settings. The goal is to ensure that scientific discoveries directly contribute to better mental health outcomes.
The funding forms part of Australia’s broader commitment to strengthening mental health services and building a more proactive, prevention-focused healthcare system. By investing in early intervention and innovative research, the government aims to reduce the long-term impact of mental illness and improve wellbeing across different age groups.
Further details on eligibility and application processes are available through official government grant platforms, including GrantConnect and the MRFF programme calendar.
