Kids Help Phone (KHP), in partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), has announced a major five-year research collaboration aimed at transforming youth mental health support through artificial intelligence. The initiative is backed by a $3.2 million grant from the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation known for funding health innovation projects. The partnership focuses on developing a generative AI-powered conversation simulator designed to help train crisis responder volunteers more effectively by allowing them to practice real-life youth mental health scenarios in a safe, controlled environment.
The AI system will be built using a large dataset of more than 750,000 de-identified youth crisis transcripts, enabling it to generate realistic and anonymized interactions that reflect the language, tone, and emotional complexity of real conversations. This tool is intended to improve the preparedness of volunteers by offering real-time feedback aligned with clinical standards, strengthening the quality and consistency of support provided to young people in crisis situations.
Beyond training improvements, the collaboration highlights a broader shift toward integrating responsible AI into mental health services. KHP and TMU aim to combine clinical expertise, digital health infrastructure, and advanced machine learning research to enhance service delivery while ensuring ethical and youth-centered design. Young people are also actively involved in the research process, contributing feedback to ensure the system reflects their lived experiences and communication styles.
The initiative also responds to rising demand for youth mental health services, with KHP reporting millions of annual interactions and increasing volumes of text-based crisis conversations in recent years. By expanding the use of AI in training and support systems, the project seeks to improve response readiness, scalability, and accessibility of mental health care for young people in Canada and beyond, while also serving as a potential global model for other helplines and youth support organizations.
