A national dialogue held in Dhaka emphasized the growing importance of responsible business conduct as a key driver for strengthening Bangladesh’s trade competitiveness. The event brought together government officials, private sector representatives, development partners, civil society members, and industry experts to discuss how aligning business practices with global sustainability and due diligence standards can help the country maintain and expand its access to international markets, especially as it prepares for graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
Speakers highlighted that responsible business practices are no longer just a compliance requirement but have become a strategic economic priority. They noted that global trade systems are increasingly shaped by sustainability expectations, ethical sourcing requirements, and supply chain transparency. In this context, businesses that adopt responsible practices are more likely to gain investor confidence and maintain stable access to export markets.
The Commerce Minister, along with other senior officials, emphasized that Bangladesh’s future trade success will depend not only on low production costs but also on environmental responsibility, labour standards, transparency, and overall sustainable business operations. Strengthening these areas, they said, will help position Bangladesh as a competitive and reliable sourcing destination in global supply chains.
Speakers also stressed the need for stronger institutional coordination and supportive policy frameworks to help businesses, especially small and medium enterprises, adapt to evolving international trade requirements. They suggested that structured national mechanisms and dedicated support systems are necessary to guide businesses through the transition toward responsible business conduct.
Development partners, including UNDP representatives, underscored that inclusive implementation is essential to ensure that all segments of the economy benefit from this shift. They noted that responsible business conduct can improve not only compliance but also operational efficiency, market reputation, and long-term economic resilience.
Overall, the dialogue concluded that strengthening responsible business practices is essential for improving Bangladesh’s trade competitiveness, attracting foreign investment, and ensuring sustainable economic growth in a rapidly changing global trade environment.
