Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee, has highlighted the growing trade and investment opportunities between Ireland and countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Speaking at the Ireland, Latin America and the Caribbean Trade Horizons Forum held at Croke Park, the Minister encouraged Irish businesses to view the region as an important emerging trade frontier with significant long-term economic potential.
The forum brought together trade delegations, government representatives, and business leaders from Ireland and across the Latin America and Caribbean region to explore opportunities for cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, innovation, and economic development. According to official figures presented during the event, two-way trade between Ireland and the region has increased substantially in recent years, rising by approximately 64 percent since 2021 and reaching a record value of €18 billion. Trade in goods alone has more than doubled during the same period.
Minister McEntee emphasized that Ireland has been investing heavily in strengthening diplomatic and economic engagement with the region through initiatives such as expanding its international presence, supporting direct air connectivity, and negotiating new agreements to facilitate trade and business cooperation. These efforts form part of Ireland’s broader market diversification strategy, which seeks to reduce reliance on traditional trading partners and strengthen economic ties with emerging global markets.
Irish officials noted that sectors including agrifood, pharmaceuticals, engineering, technology, manufacturing, and sustainable development offer strong opportunities for future collaboration between Ireland and LAC countries. The forum also highlighted shared interests in areas such as innovation, climate action, sustainable food systems, education, and tourism. Government representatives described the partnership as extending beyond economics to include cultural, political, and multilateral cooperation based on shared democratic values and global development goals.
The Irish government has identified Latin America and the Caribbean as a strategic priority region under its Global Ireland initiative. Recent years have seen increased diplomatic engagement, including the opening of new offices and expanded support for international partnerships. Officials believe the region’s growing economies and expanding consumer markets present valuable opportunities for Irish businesses seeking international growth and diversification in an increasingly uncertain global trade environment.
