On World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, the theme “United in Humanity” is reflected in the daily commitment of volunteers across Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe, and Cameroon, who work tirelessly to support their communities despite immense challenges.
In Cameroon, volunteers are responding to food insecurity that affects them personally as well as the communities they serve. Ousmanou Leo, a volunteer since 2016, raises awareness about flood risks and supports households struggling with rising food prices. Françoise Tekalara, another volunteer, focuses on nutrition education, promoting local solutions such as enriched porridge to help families, especially those with young children. Volunteers also contribute to preventing waterborne diseases, promoting hygiene, and supporting displaced people, all while remaining deeply connected to the communities they come from.
In Gabon, volunteers like Kaël have been responding to crises such as violent winds that damaged communities. For him, the human impact and shared experiences define his commitment. Other volunteers, including Omeylista, Nordin, and Grace, embody solidarity and humanity by supporting vulnerable people regardless of religion, ethnicity, or gender. They emphasize the importance of stepping forward when others step back, offering care and compassion in moments of need.
In Sao Tome and Principe, volunteers focus on caring for elderly people living in isolation. Maluce, a volunteer since 2019, visits seniors, brings meals, and offers companionship, restoring dignity and social connection. Her work highlights the importance of presence and listening, which can be as valuable as material assistance.
Together, these stories illustrate how volunteers live solidarity every day. Whether facing food insecurity, responding to disasters, or supporting the elderly, they embody the principle of humanity by continuing to help, even when challenges are personal. Their actions show that being united in humanity means standing together to face crises and caring for those who need it most.
