The Ontario government is investing more than $14 million to improve water and stormwater infrastructure in Lanark and Frontenac counties as part of its broader strategy to support housing development and economic growth. The funding comes through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream, which focuses on strengthening essential infrastructure needed to support growing communities and protect existing homes.
A significant portion of the funding, more than $13.3 million, has been allocated to the Town of Smiths Falls for upgrades to the trunk watermain system and sewer separation improvements. These upgrades are expected to improve water system reliability and support services for approximately 1,380 existing homes. The project is intended to strengthen local infrastructure capacity while helping prepare the community for future residential growth and development.
The Township of North Frontenac will receive more than $1 million to rehabilitate and expand the stormwater management system in the Village of Plevna. The improvements are designed to enhance flood resilience and protect local infrastructure and homes from stormwater-related risks. Approximately 35 homes are expected to benefit from the upgraded system.
Ontario officials stated that investments in housing-enabling infrastructure are critical for supporting long-term economic stability, creating jobs, and maintaining reliable public services. The province has continued to expand the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program to help municipalities modernize aging systems, encourage housing construction, and strengthen community resilience across Ontario.
The latest announcement builds on Ontario’s wider infrastructure strategy, which includes billions of dollars in investments for housing, transportation, water systems, and community development projects. Since 2024, Lanark and Frontenac counties, along with the City of Kingston, have received substantial provincial support through multiple infrastructure and housing-related funding programs aimed at accelerating growth and improving essential public services.
