The Government of Ontario has announced an investment of more than $3 million to strengthen sports and recreation infrastructure in Sault Ste. Marie. The funding package includes support for hosting the 2028 Ontario Winter Games and redevelopment work at the John Rhodes Community Centre. The initiative aims to promote tourism, create employment opportunities, and improve recreational facilities for local residents and athletes across Northern Ontario.
As part of the investment, $1.3 million has been allocated to support the organization and delivery of the 2028 Ontario Winter Games. The multi-sport event is expected to welcome around 2,800 youth athletes between the ages of 12 and 18 from across Ontario. Participants will compete in nearly 20 sports, including curling, ringette, and cross-country skiing. The Games are projected to generate more than $5 million in economic activity for the region through tourism, hospitality, and local business engagement.
The province is also investing $2 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation to upgrade the John Rhodes Community Centre, which will serve as one of the key venues for the Winter Games. Planned improvements include roof replacement and installation of a modern HVAC system to enhance the facility’s long-term functionality and energy efficiency. These upgrades are expected to improve the city’s ability to host future sporting and community events while providing residents with a modern recreational environment.
Ontario officials highlighted that the investment will help strengthen communities, support youth athletic development, and contribute to long-term economic growth in Northern Ontario. The funding announcement also builds on the province’s broader investments in community sport and recreation infrastructure projects aimed at improving public facilities across Ontario.
