The Government of Ontario has announced an investment of more than $6.5 million in emergency preparedness grants to strengthen the capabilities of Ontario Corps partners across the province. The funding will support 13 partner organizations by providing essential equipment, supplies, and training to ensure rapid deployment during emergencies and natural disasters, reinforcing the province’s broader strategy to protect communities and improve response readiness.
According to Jill Dunlop, the initiative focuses on building a coordinated network of skilled professionals, trained volunteers, and resources that can be mobilized quickly when crises occur. The province has now invested a total of $21.5 million into Ontario Corps, enabling the acquisition of tools such as flood barriers, drones, mobile shelters, food distribution systems, and protective equipment. These resources are designed to be deployed within 24 to 72 hours, while ongoing training ensures responders are prepared to act effectively.
The funding supports a wide range of organizations, including The Salvation Army Canada, Habitat for Humanity, GlobalMedic, St. John Ambulance, and Radio Amateurs of Canada, among others. These partners contribute specialized expertise ranging from emergency communications and search and rescue to food distribution and psychosocial support, helping to create a comprehensive and coordinated response system.
The announcement coincides with Emergency Preparedness Week, which aims to raise public awareness about preparedness measures such as creating emergency plans, assembling supply kits, and staying informed during crises. Officials highlighted recent deployments of Ontario Corps teams to support communities affected by flooding, demonstrating the program’s operational role in real-world emergencies.
Looking ahead, Ontario Corps continues to expand through new partnerships with organizations such as Labatt Breweries of Canada and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. The initiative is also supported by the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre, with plans for a new headquarters that will serve as a 24/7 command centre equipped with advanced technology to coordinate emergency response efforts across the province.
Overall, the investment reflects a broader effort to build a more resilient and responsive emergency management system in Ontario, combining public sector coordination with community-based partnerships to ensure faster, more effective support for residents during times of crisis.
