Ontario is set to strengthen its position as a global leader in life sciences and artificial intelligence with a $294 million investment from Sanofi. The funding will expand the company’s Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in Toronto, building on an existing workforce of more than 150 employees and creating 50 new high-quality jobs in the region.
The expansion will focus on advancing capabilities in artificial intelligence, machine learning and pharmaceutical data science. By leveraging Ontario’s skilled workforce and strong innovation ecosystem, the initiative aims to accelerate the development of medicines and vaccines, improving healthcare outcomes both locally and globally. The project will also strengthen collaboration with academic institutions and support the development of future STEM talent through internships and training opportunities.
The Ontario government is supporting the project with up to $5 million through Invest Ontario, aligning with its broader life sciences strategy to enhance innovation and economic growth. The investment reflects continued confidence in the province’s competitive advantages, including its highly educated workforce, advanced infrastructure and strong research environment.
Toronto was originally selected by Sanofi in 2022 as the location for its global AI Centre of Excellence due to its leadership in artificial intelligence and its well-established life sciences ecosystem. The company has further expanded its presence in the province with major investments in biomanufacturing, reinforcing Ontario’s role as a key hub for pharmaceutical innovation and production.
This latest investment adds to Ontario’s broader economic momentum, with the province attracting significant domestic and international investments in recent years. With a strong pipeline of skilled graduates and growing expertise in emerging technologies, Ontario continues to position itself as a leading destination for innovation, job creation and advancements in healthcare and life sciences.
