Asia’s shift towards a low-carbon economy is being hindered by a shortage of skilled professionals capable of turning sustainability commitments into practical action. To address this gap, Singapore Management University (SMU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a Statement of Intent to build a strong pipeline of sustainability talent across the Asia-Pacific region through education, research and leadership development initiatives.
The partnership, based in Singapore, aims to combine academic learning with real-world policy and project experience. UNDP will collaborate with SMU to equip students, graduates and mid-career professionals with the skills needed to tackle complex sustainability challenges. This builds on an existing pilot within SMU’s Master of Sustainability programme, where UNDP experts already engage directly with postgraduate students transitioning into sustainability careers.
Both institutions plan to co-develop undergraduate and postgraduate curricula aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring a continuous pathway from education to practical implementation. Students will also gain hands-on experience through internships, fieldwork and project-based learning linked to UNDP initiatives across the region, strengthening their ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts.
The collaboration further includes joint research on sustainability standards, policy frameworks and industry practices, alongside the development of teaching materials to enhance academic and professional standards. It also introduces training programmes aimed at building capacity among educators and students, helping to scale knowledge and expertise across the region.
Leaders from both organisations emphasised the importance of connecting education with real-world challenges and investing in youth to drive sustainable development. The initiative aligns with Singapore’s growing role as a hub for green finance and governance, while supporting SMU’s long-term strategy to deliver impact through education, research and partnerships.
