The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has launched HungerMap Live, a next-generation digital platform designed to monitor, analyze, and forecast global food insecurity in real time. The system integrates large-scale food security data with predictive modelling to provide a clearer and more up-to-date picture of hunger conditions across more than 50 countries, particularly in regions facing severe and worsening food crises.
The platform uses AI-assisted forecasting to anticipate food needs in 16 designated Hunger Hotspots, where populations are already experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger. By enabling early warning and anticipatory action, HungerMap Live aims to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of humanitarian response, with WFP noting that early interventions can generate significant savings compared to emergency responses.
The release comes amid a sharp rise in extreme hunger globally, with the number of people facing the most severe level of food insecurity increasing significantly in recent years. The platform brings together data from more than 300 WFP analysts as well as information from governments and international partners, including climate, agricultural, market, and economic indicators, to create a comprehensive global monitoring system.
Developed with support from Google, the platform also addresses three key questions: the current state of global food security, regions requiring urgent intervention, and the underlying drivers of hunger. It further includes a specialized nutrition layer that assesses micronutrient intake, helping identify populations at risk of hidden hunger due to poor dietary quality.
WFP leadership emphasized that data is essential for preventing hunger before it escalates, highlighting that improved early warning systems enable faster, more targeted action. However, the organization also warned that declining funding for food security data collection threatens the ability to track emerging crises effectively.
HungerMap Live is now publicly accessible and is intended to support governments, humanitarian agencies, and donors in making faster, evidence-based decisions to prevent and respond to global hunger crises.
