The Asian Development Bank has approved a $115.8 million loan to improve environmentally sustainable and resilient urban services in Narayanganj City Corporation in Bangladesh. The initiative aims to enhance basic urban infrastructure while strengthening the city’s ability to manage rapid urbanization and environmental challenges.
The Narayanganj Green and Resilient Urban Development Project will upgrade drinking water supply systems, modernize drainage infrastructure, and expand green public spaces. It will also build institutional capacity within the city corporation and local communities, benefiting around 400,000 residents while supporting efforts to reduce congestion in Dhaka and improve service delivery in a key urban growth center.
The project will improve water supply efficiency by reducing nonrevenue water to below 20% through pipeline expansion, metered household connections, and district metered systems. It will also introduce digital technologies for better monitoring and management, alongside improved billing and revenue collection systems.
Water supply capacity in Narayanganj is expected to increase significantly through new tube wells, rehabilitation of treatment facilities, and upgrades to existing systems. The project will also enhance climate resilience by expanding drainage infrastructure using nature-based solutions, increasing the use of surface water, and reducing flooding risks.
Additionally, the initiative will develop inclusive green parks and rehabilitate public recreational spaces to improve urban livability and reduce heat stress. Overall, the project combines infrastructure development with governance strengthening to support long-term sustainability, economic growth, and improved quality of life in Narayanganj.
