Research Ireland has welcomed the Irish government’s approval for a major €100 million expansion of the Tyndall National Institute. This investment marks the first significant project under INSPIRE, the government’s €750 million initiative aimed at transforming research infrastructure across Ireland’s higher education sector. The program, announced in November 2025 and led by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, seeks to strengthen Ireland’s research capabilities on a national and global scale.
Dr. Diarmuid O’Brien, CEO of Research Ireland, highlighted that the three-year expansion project will significantly enhance the institute’s capacity and competitiveness. The upgrade is expected to advance Ireland’s leadership in semiconductor research, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and advanced manufacturing. Over the past two decades, Research Ireland has supported innovation at the Tyndall National Institute, including through the IPIC Research Ireland Centre for Photonics. Dr. O’Brien emphasized that the government’s commitment, led by Minister James Lawless, demonstrates unprecedented support for strengthening Ireland’s research infrastructure.
