South Africa is strengthening collaboration between government and infrastructure organizations to improve project preparation, attract investment and accelerate the delivery of critical infrastructure.
A new Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Infrastructure South Africa, the National Building Institute, the Infrastructure Technical Assistance Facility and Zutari during the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa in Cape Town.
The agreement is aimed at improving cooperation and supporting infrastructure projects from early planning through to implementation. Infrastructure South Africa is responsible for identifying and prioritizing strategic projects, preparing them for investment and helping mobilize public and private sector financing.
Infrastructure South Africa also coordinates the country’s priority infrastructure pipeline, monitors projects and works to address regulatory barriers that can delay development.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson said the symposium brings together government representatives, project sponsors, investors, financiers and technical professionals to turn infrastructure commitments into viable projects and functioning assets.
More than 1,200 delegates are expected to participate in the event, alongside African ministers, mayors and provincial representatives. The discussions are focused on strengthening cooperation and accelerating infrastructure development across South Africa and the wider continent.
The government has emphasized that successful infrastructure development requires more than additional funding. Municipalities also need strong project preparation, technical expertise, sustainable financing models and effective plans for operating and maintaining infrastructure over its full life cycle.
Reliable water, sanitation, electricity, roads and waste-management services remain essential to economic growth and public service delivery. Strengthening partnerships between government and technical institutions could therefore help South Africa move priority projects from planning to construction and improve the long-term delivery of essential infrastructure.
