Barbados Strengthens Responsible Suicide Reporting Through Media Training

Dated: August 25, 2026

Barbados is strengthening responsible communication on suicide and mental health through a multi-sectoral media training initiative led by the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).

The two-day training brought together journalists, editors, content creators, government communicators, journalism educators, mental health professionals and emergency service representatives. The initiative focused on helping participants communicate about suicide accurately, sensitively and responsibly.

Responsible reporting is important because sensationalized, repetitive or stigmatizing coverage can contribute to misinformation and harmful perceptions. In contrast, careful reporting can promote mental health awareness, encourage people to seek support and help reduce stigma.

Participants explored international reporting guidance and discussed how these principles can be applied within Barbados’ media environment. Practical sessions also examined newsroom challenges and ways to incorporate responsible reporting practices into everyday media work.

The training highlighted the growing role of social media creators, who can reach large audiences quickly and influence public conversations around mental health. Participants stressed the importance of providing accurate information and directing audiences toward appropriate sources of support.

Stakeholders also identified the need for continued training, stronger newsroom practices and greater collaboration across the media, health and education sectors.

The initiative, supported by PAHO/WHO through the Universal Health Coverage Partnership, aims to move beyond guidelines and help establish practical, sustainable approaches to responsible suicide and mental health communication in Barbados.
