A new financing initiative in Bangladesh is creating fresh opportunities for returnee migrant workers by helping them use their overseas skills, experience, and savings to establish sustainable businesses.
The BDT 50 million initiative, launched by the SME Foundation and Karmasangsthan Bank with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) Bangladesh and the Embassy of Switzerland, aims to address one of the biggest challenges faced by returning migrants: limited access to affordable business finance.
Many Bangladeshi workers return home after years abroad with valuable professional skills and savings but struggle to convert these resources into successful enterprises. The new programme provides concessional loans, collateral-free financing options, and flexible repayment conditions to help them start or expand businesses.
Under the initiative, eligible returnee entrepreneurs can access financing of up to BDT 2.5 million at a seven percent interest rate. Loans of up to BDT 1 million will be available without collateral, while repayment periods of up to four years and grace periods of up to six months are designed to support new businesses during their early stages.
The programme focuses on migrants who are using their overseas experience to develop productive, service-based, or trading businesses in Bangladesh. It will also support newly returned migrants who have not previously been able to access formal financial services.
Government officials and development partners highlighted the importance of transforming migration experiences into economic opportunities. By supporting returnee entrepreneurs, the initiative aims to turn remittances and overseas skills into job creation, stronger local economies, and inclusive economic growth.
ILO Bangladesh emphasized that successful reintegration is not only about returning home but also about creating opportunities for migrants to build stable livelihoods. Access to finance, business support, and entrepreneurship services can help returnees establish enterprises that benefit their families and communities.
The initiative will be monitored by the SME Foundation to ensure transparent distribution of funds and effective support for beneficiaries. It is part of broader efforts to promote safe migration, decent work, financial inclusion, and sustainable employment opportunities in Bangladesh.
