The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is contributing to a coordinated humanitarian response in Honduras aimed at improving access to essential healthcare services for more than 224,000 people living in some of the country’s most vulnerable communities. The initiative forms part of a broader United Nations-led effort that brings together multiple UN agencies and non-governmental organizations to address urgent humanitarian needs across the country.
Honduras continues to face a complex humanitarian situation driven by overlapping challenges. Persistent insecurity, recurring droughts, and other severe climate-related events have placed significant pressure on communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas. These conditions have weakened food security, disrupted livelihoods, and reduced access to critical services such as healthcare and safe drinking water, increasing vulnerability among affected populations.
To respond to these challenges, the humanitarian initiative, funded through the Honduras Humanitarian Fund, focuses on strengthening several key sectors including health, food security, water, sanitation, and hygiene. The coordinated approach seeks to provide immediate relief while helping communities maintain access to essential services during periods of heightened need.
As part of its contribution, UNOPS will supply life-saving medicines to 60 healthcare facilities located across 31 municipalities, including remote and difficult-to-access regions. The medicines will support the continuity of treatment for patients with chronic illnesses, enhance emergency and trauma care services, and strengthen reproductive healthcare provision. By improving the availability of essential medical supplies, the initiative aims to reduce disruptions in healthcare delivery and support better health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
