The Government of India has launched a ₹200-crore MAHA Water Mission under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) in partnership with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aiming to boost innovation in the water sector by supporting startups, MSMEs, researchers, and institutions across the country.
The initiative was announced by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, who emphasized that the ANRF is designed to democratize access to research funding and expand opportunities beyond a small group of established institutions. The goal is to create a more inclusive innovation ecosystem where emerging startups and smaller universities can contribute to national development priorities.
The MAHA Water Mission is part of a broader ANRF framework that supports mission-driven research in high-impact sectors such as electric vehicles, drones, medical technologies, 6G communications, and now water management. The program is intended to connect early-stage research with real-world deployment through collaboration between government agencies, industry, and academic institutions.
A key feature of the initiative is an open call for startups and MSMEs to develop water-related products and prototypes. The mission also includes mechanisms to fund research, validate technologies, and support commercialization, helping bridge the gap between innovation and large-scale implementation.
Officials highlighted that India’s startup ecosystem has expanded significantly in recent years, growing from a few hundred startups a decade ago to more than two lakh today. The government views this growth as a major driver of innovation-led economic development and job creation.
The MAHA Water Mission is also linked to broader national reforms aimed at improving coordination across government departments and encouraging private sector participation in strategic sectors. Similar reforms in the space sector were cited as an example of how policy changes can unlock new markets and accelerate growth.
In addition to funding support, the initiative includes collaboration between the Department of Water Resources and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), along with the launch of digital platforms to support citizen participation in water conservation efforts.
Government officials stated that water security is a critical national priority and that combining research, innovation, and public engagement will be essential for developing scalable solutions. The mission is expected to support technologies that improve water management, conservation, and distribution systems across India.
Overall, the MAHA Water Mission represents a structured effort to integrate scientific research with entrepreneurship, aiming to accelerate the development of practical solutions for India’s water challenges while expanding access to public research funding.
