The Government of Canada and the Government of Québec have announced a major new infrastructure partnership aimed at strengthening communities across the province through nearly $10 billion in combined federal investment over the next decade. The initiative focuses on large-scale upgrades to housing, healthcare, public transit, and community infrastructure under national funding programs designed to accelerate development and economic growth.
The announcement was made in Longueuil, Québec, as part of a broader federal strategy to invest in both national-scale projects and local infrastructure that directly impacts everyday life. Officials emphasized that the goal is to modernize essential services while supporting long-term economic competitiveness.
A significant portion of the funding will be delivered through the Build Communities Strong Fund, which will support housing, post-secondary institutions, community centres, and healthcare infrastructure across Québec. Additional investments will target hospitals, emergency services, and medical facilities to improve access to faster and higher-quality care.
Public transit is also a major focus of the agreement, with multi-billion-dollar funding allocated through the Canada Public Transit Fund. This includes support for expanding and modernizing transit systems across the province, alongside the creation of a new Strong Transit Fund intended to streamline project delivery and accelerate infrastructure upgrades in major urban areas.
The agreement also includes dedicated funding to advance electrification in public transportation through the Zero Emission Transit Fund. This will support the deployment of electric buses and charging infrastructure as part of Canada’s broader climate and sustainability goals.
Federal officials described the partnership as part of a coordinated effort to strengthen communities, improve infrastructure resilience, and stimulate economic growth. The investment is expected to generate significant employment opportunities across engineering, construction, and project management sectors while contributing substantially to long-term GDP growth.
The Build Communities Strong Fund, launched in April 2026, represents one of the federal government’s largest infrastructure programs, with a national mandate to support housing, transit, healthcare, education, and climate adaptation projects. Québec will receive funding through multiple streams of this program over the next several years.
The announcement marks a continued push by federal and provincial governments to accelerate infrastructure development and address growing demands in urban and regional communities across Québec, with a focus on delivering faster project approvals and improving coordination between different levels of government.
