Kharkiv Oblast — May 29, 2026 — In war‑affected communities across Ukraine, damaged homes and broken heating systems have left families struggling to endure harsh winters. With support from the European Union, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has provided cash assistance, repairs, and follow‑up support to help households in Kharkiv Oblast stay warm.
For Valentyna and Volodymyr in Derhachi, damaged walls and drafty wooden windows made their home unsafe during freezing temperatures. With 19,400 UAH (€375) in cash assistance, they covered heating costs and invested in new flooring. DRC’s Shelter and Settlements team also replaced the old windows, transforming the house into a cosy, livable space.
In Nova Hnylytsia, Larysa and her family faced similar challenges after fleeing Kupiansk. Their rented home lacked gas heating, forcing them to rely on a wood‑burning stove. DRC’s support enabled them to purchase firewood and install a solid‑fuel furnace, ensuring efficient heating throughout the season.
These interventions highlight how small but targeted assistance can make a profound difference. Beyond immediate heating needs, DRC’s case management helped families identify additional priorities, from new windows to improved furnaces. Together, these measures provided resilience against the cold and restored a sense of stability.
Thanks to EU funding, families in Kharkiv Oblast were able to withstand the winter months with dignity and safety, demonstrating the impact of humanitarian support in conflict‑affected regions
