Space simulation epic Star Citizen has officially surpassed $1 billion in total funding, marking one of the most extraordinary milestones in gaming history. The achievement coincides with the release of a new $5,000 virtual spaceship, the Anvil Odin, which players cannot yet fly in‑game.
Developer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) confirmed the record via its public funding tracker, which showed over $6.6 million raised in a single hour during the in‑game DefenseCon 2956 event. The Odin, described as a massive battlecruiser measuring 752 meters long and designed for crews of up to 65 players, was sold as a “limited vehicle concept pledge.” Buyers receive a temporary loaner ship until the Odin becomes playable in a future patch.
To purchase the Odin, fans had to apply to join the Odin Founders Club, submitting essays explaining their leadership vision for commanding such a vessel. Successful applicants were invited to pledge for the ship, priced at $5,000 Warbond or $5,900 store credit.
CIG said the sale closes out the final vehicle stretch goals set at the project’s inception more than a decade ago. The studio emphasized that pledge ships help fund development and will eventually be earnable through gameplay.
Meanwhile, Squadron 42, the single‑player spinoff starring Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, and Henry Cavill, is reportedly in its final development stages. Creator Chris Roberts compared his long‑term creative process to James Cameron’s Avatar films, saying the game is “coming together really well” and represents his full vision for the universe.
