St. Charles Health System has announced Community Benefit grants totaling more than $240,000 to 45 local organizations in Central Oregon. The grants are intended to support basic needs, sponsor local events, and advance two priority focus areas: improving access to healthy, affordable food and fostering a sense of belonging to reduce loneliness.
Among the recipients, Open Door Ministries received a $5,000 Basic Needs grant to continue its work assisting individuals experiencing poverty or houselessness. The organization, affiliated with Bend Methodist Church, provides free clothing, hygiene items, food, and financial support for essentials such as utilities and gas. It also operates a mailroom service for more than 200 Central Oregonians without permanent addresses, offering a vital connection to resources and community.
Volunteers like Charlotte Hartman, who has served for nearly 40 years, emphasized the importance of meeting the growing needs of marginalized people. She noted that the work not only provides tangible support but also helps individuals feel seen and cared for.
Carlos Salcedo, manager of Community Partnerships at St. Charles, highlighted the increasing demand for support, with more than 90 organizations applying for funding this year—a significant rise compared to previous years. He expressed pride in being able to back local initiatives that address pressing community needs and strengthen resilience across Central Oregon.
