Bread and Water for Africa Funds Critical Child Shelters in East Africa

Dated: May 19, 2026

Bread and Water for Africa® has long focused its mission on providing comprehensive care and support for the most vulnerable children, including those who are orphaned, abandoned, neglected, or abused. For nearly four decades, this work has been sustained by the generosity of donors, enabling targeted strategies that foster resilience and hope. The organization’s grant funding ensures that orphanages such as Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage (WWAO) in Tanzania and Lerato Children’s Home in Zimbabwe can continue to feed, shelter, clothe, and educate children while providing essential healthcare.

At WWAO, director Josephat Kirutu reported that the support covered food, clothing, hygiene items, medical care, school needs, utilities, and household supplies, creating a safe and nurturing environment for 118 children and youth. All children are vetted and referred by the Social Welfare Department, ensuring that support reaches those most in need. The funding also covers caregiver salaries, guaranteeing consistent supervision and emotional support. This has allowed children to attend school regularly, participate in daily activities, and experience stability. Among them is 17‑year‑old Benson Anton, who has thrived academically and socially under the orphanage’s care, expressing gratitude for the encouragement and safety he receives.

Josephat’s wife, Rosemary, emphasized the joy of seeing children grow healthy and confident, noting that the program’s support provides daily meals, guidance, and a nurturing environment. At Lerato Children’s Home in Zimbabwe, social worker Rumbidzai Chadamoyo described how grant funding created a safe and supportive environment for orphans and vulnerable children. She recounted the case of three siblings who had suffered abuse and homelessness before being placed at Lerato, where they found relief and stability.

The children expressed gratitude for the safe accommodation and care they received, while staff highlighted the importance of donor support in restoring welfare and social functioning. Rumbidzai concluded by thanking Bread and Water for Africa® supporters for their generosity, which significantly enhanced the quality of care and ensured the success of the program.
