Humanitarian and development organizations have expressed shock and sadness over the killing of Wesam Qaid, Acting Executive Director of the Social Fund for Development (SFD) in Yemen. Wesam was abducted on 3 May and later found dead in Aden, a tragic loss for the development community.
Wesam was widely respected for his leadership and dedication to improving livelihoods for vulnerable communities. He founded the Small and Micro Enterprise Promotion Service (SMEPS) and played a key role at the SFD, contributing significantly to inclusive economic development across Yemen.
Organizations have unequivocally condemned the killing and called for a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation to ensure accountability under the law. They also raised concerns about the broader risks faced by humanitarian and development personnel, stressing that violence against those working to assist communities is unacceptable and undermines efforts to alleviate suffering.
This incident highlights the urgent need to strengthen protection for humanitarian and development workers in Yemen. The organizations extended their deepest condolences to Wesam’s family, colleagues, and all who worked alongside him, affirming that his contributions to the people of Yemen will be remembered.
