The International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office Director for Zambia and Malawi, Mr. Wellington Chibebe, met with Irish Ambassador to Zambia, Mr. Aidan Fitzpatrick, in Lusaka to strengthen cooperation on advancing Zambia’s social protection agenda. The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between the ILO and Ireland in promoting inclusive systems that safeguard vulnerable populations.
Ambassador Fitzpatrick commended the ILO for its technical support to the Government of Zambia, particularly in expanding universal health coverage and strengthening inclusive social protection programmes such as the Social Cash Transfer initiative. He highlighted the positive impact of these efforts on vulnerable communities.
Mr. Chibebe emphasized the significance of sustained cooperation in building stronger social protection frameworks. He noted Zambia’s progress toward ratifying ILO Convention No. 102, which represents a critical step toward establishing comprehensive systems that ensure no one is left behind.
The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment of the ILO and the Government of Ireland to promote decent work, expand social protection coverage, and advance social justice. Special focus was placed on supporting vulnerable and marginalized populations across Zambia, aligning with broader goals of inclusive development and resilience.
