The African Development Bank (AfDB) has strengthened its partnership with Germany to support the development of modern, sustainable, and integrated railway infrastructure across Africa. The collaboration aims to enhance technical expertise, expand capacity-building programs, and accelerate the modernization of rail systems that are essential for economic integration and regional connectivity on the continent.
As part of this initiative, AfDB engaged with German institutions including DB Engineering & Consulting and federal ministries to explore opportunities for joint investment, training, and knowledge exchange. A key focus of the discussions was the establishment of an African Rail Competence Centre, which would serve as a hub for innovation, skills development, and technical support for railway projects across African countries.
The partnership also emphasizes the importance of strengthening human capital through specialized training in engineering, transport systems, and STEM-based education. Visits to Germany’s advanced railway training facilities highlighted how structured capacity-building programs can support African countries in developing skilled professionals capable of managing complex railway infrastructure systems.
In addition to skills development, the collaboration seeks to promote sustainable transport solutions that integrate rail networks with urban planning and economic development. The initiative encourages African cities to adopt multimodal transport systems that reduce congestion, improve mobility, and support climate-resilient infrastructure growth.
Overall, the AfDB–Germany partnership reflects a long-term commitment to transforming Africa’s railway sector by combining investment, technical expertise, and institutional cooperation. The initiative is expected to play a significant role in strengthening regional trade, improving connectivity, and supporting inclusive economic development across the continent.
