The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has launched a new virtual training course under its Digital Literacy Program in Health to strengthen Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems across the Americas. Delivered through its Virtual Campus for Public Health, the course offers a flexible, self-paced learning experience designed to improve how countries collect, manage, and use data on births, deaths, and causes of death.
The initiative brings together regional and international experts to build technical capacity among health professionals, civil registration authorities, and data specialists. It focuses on enhancing the quality, availability, and usability of vital statistics, which are essential for informed policymaking, efficient resource allocation, and monitoring public health outcomes.
The course also addresses key challenges facing CRVS systems in an increasingly digital environment. These include integrating registration systems with broader health information platforms, adopting international standards such as ICD-11, and improving data governance and interoperability across institutions.
By strengthening these systems, PAHO aims to support more effective decision-making and reinforce health system resilience across the region, ensuring that reliable data underpins public health strategies and long-term planning.
