GitLab Foundation has released its 2026 Impact Report, showing that its outcomes‑driven grantmaking is delivering returns far beyond expectations. The report projects $8 billion in lifetime earnings gains for more than 775,000 individuals worldwide, with every $1 invested generating approximately $193 in lifetime earnings. This surpasses the Foundation’s ambitious target of $100 per dollar invested and underscores the growing demand for measurable results in philanthropy.
By the end of FY26, 40 grants had reported results, with more than three‑quarters exceeding their ROI threshold. On average, these grants increased annual earnings by nearly $12,000 per person and lifetime earnings by over $125,000. In total, the Foundation awarded more than 80 grants, committing $20.4 million and mobilizing an additional $18.2 million in co‑funding from peer organizations.
President and CEO Ellie Bertani emphasized that the Foundation’s role is not only to fund solutions but also to take early risks, prove what is possible, and create conditions for larger capital to follow. The report includes stories of impact, such as asylum seeker Estuardo Cifuentes, who contributed to the development of Pathfinder, an AI platform that helps track immigration status changes.
Featured grantees span diverse sectors and geographies, including AkiraChix, where alumni earn up to six times the average income in sub‑Saharan Africa; Carina, a home‑care platform with a projected 107x return on investment; and Recidiviz, which uses AI to support justice‑impacted individuals and has a projected 439x return. Several of these investments have attracted additional co‑funding, multiplying the impact of GitLab Foundation’s early grants.
The Foundation also launched its Impact Advisory Services team in FY26 to help peer funders apply ROI measurement to their work, reflecting growing interest in outcomes‑based philanthropy. In addition, through the AI for Economic Opportunity Fund, developed with OpenAI and supported by partners such as Ballmer Group and The Annie E. Casey Foundation, GitLab Foundation is backing organizations that use AI to expand access to career opportunities, essential services, and sustainable employment.
Overall, the Foundation’s approach demonstrates a broader vision for philanthropy where outcomes define success and learnings are shared openly. By aligning ambitious goals with real‑world data and disciplined execution, GitLab Foundation is reshaping how impact is measured and delivered across the sector.
