Ireland’s Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, has announced nearly €8 million in government funding for regional airports as part of the Regional Airports Programme 2026–2030. This new five-year initiative expands eligibility for support to airports handling up to three million passengers annually, allowing Shannon Airport to benefit from the programme for the first time.
The funding will be distributed among Shannon Airport, Ireland West Airport Knock, Kerry Airport, and Donegal Airport. A total of 32 projects will be supported, including the replacement of fire tenders, upgrades to safety and security infrastructure, and the completion of a solar photovoltaic project at Ireland West Airport to enhance renewable energy use.
Government officials emphasized that the investment reflects the importance of regional airports in supporting economic growth, tourism, and job creation. Strengthening these airports is seen as key to improving connectivity, ensuring balanced regional development, and maximizing the use of existing infrastructure across the country.
In addition to operational improvements, the funding also supports sustainability efforts. Projects financed under the programme will help airports reduce carbon emissions, improve resilience to climate change, and meet future environmental targets while continuing to expand capacity and services.
