The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in collaboration with the Government of Jamaica, provided fertilizer support to farmers during a ceremony held in Trelawny as part of recovery efforts following the impacts of Hurricanes Beryl and Melissa. The initiative aims to help restore agricultural production and support farmers in rebuilding their livelihoods after significant climate-related damage.
This support is part of a broader emergency response programme across several Caribbean countries, with hundreds of fertilizer units being distributed to farmers in multiple parishes through the Rural Agricultural Development Authority. The intervention highlights ongoing efforts to address immediate agricultural needs while strengthening recovery in the sector.
Officials emphasized the importance of resilience and collaboration in recovery efforts. FAO representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting farmers facing repeated climate shocks, while government leaders stressed that coordinated partnerships are essential for effective and sustainable recovery. Local authorities also highlighted their role in ensuring timely and efficient distribution of resources to affected communities.
Beyond fertilizer distribution, additional support is being provided to farmers and fishers through complementary initiatives. These include the supply of seeds for short-cycle crops, water tanks, protective equipment, and farming tools, as well as assistance to fisheries through the provision of essential materials to help restore operations.
Further efforts are being implemented through projects supported by international funding mechanisms, including initiatives financed by the Green Climate Fund. These programmes aim not only to address immediate recovery needs but also to enhance long-term resilience within the agricultural sector.
In addition to material support, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations continues to work with national partners to strengthen capacity through training in disaster risk management and preparedness. These efforts are designed to help farmers and rural communities better withstand and recover from future climate-related challenges, ensuring more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.
